Coaches Corner: Introducing Coach Oz Andren

It’s time to get to know more about our newest (and fabulous) addition to the coaching team, Coach Oz!

How long have you been doing CrossFit? 7 years.

How long have you been coaching? 6 years.

What do you love most about coaching?
I am super passionate about functional health. The physical and mental benefits are outstanding. I have sustained injuries over the years, including a broken back, and I have a deep understanding of how crucial staying mobile is to our physical and mental well being. Being able to share this passion and the knowledge I have gained through my experience with others is more than rewarding to me. It’s necessary. What can we find you doing in your spare time? Hobbies you dig? It’s hard for my to discern between spare time and work. I love what I do 😃 so work has become play. But, I would call myself a doer of things… A maker. I like to create. Screen printing, photography, building furniture, hiking, camping, and finding new water holes to swim in!If you could high five anyone (dead or alive) who would it be and why? Elon Musk. I respect his contributions to the fields of science and business. I respect that he accomplishes his goals by generating solutions in ways many others aren’t willing to do.

A bucket list item you hope to cross off this year?
Participate in my first competition in the Pacific North West. Woohoo!

Your biggest CrossFit accomplishment?
Being able to say I helped open, run, and begin building a family with the only box in Ames, IA in 2010. I was also pretty psyched when I pulled a sub 3min Fran.

A fun fact we don’t know about you?
I taught Graphic Design for Iowa State University in Rome, Italy.

What is the theme song to your life?
I can’t really coin a theme SONG to my life… But there is definitely an album that was a crucial part of my life and really sets the tone for who I am. Blink-182 – Enema of the State.

You’ve been in a lot of gyms, and CFWS is still a bit new for you, but what about it feels different than others (so far)?
CrossFIT is known for its focus on the aspect of community. Which you see to a certain extent in every gym. But to me, CFWS does an exceptional job at keeping open communications between everyone-and it has been like that at every class. Always inclusive, never the feeling of judgement, and a genuine feeling of interest.
