August brings us Member Appreciation Month, which means WEEKLY Member of the Month editions to celebrate and highlight some of your fellow athletes!
This week…….. please join me celebrating Marie Trigona! Marie is fierce from head to toe, and from the inside out and can be seen just about every day of the week – even working on her hops between classes! Check out some fun facts below about the one, the only…. Marie!
How long have you been doing CrossFit? I joined CFWS in December, 2014 with no weightlifting or circuit training experience. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Since I started I’ve grown as a person and as an athlete.
What brought you to CFWS and what makes CFWS special? The community at CFWS is what makes this place so special. The best part about CFWS are the badass ladies (sorry, guys) who push themselves and also push me every day. Being around such strong women has helped me get past some of my insecurities and believe that I’m also a badass. I have a lot gratitude for the CFWS coaches, there have been moments where I didn’t think I would ever be able to get certain movement and they were persistent in showing me and encouraging me that if I work hard, I’ll get it.
An item on your bucket list not yet crossed off? Some of my goals for 2016 include learning how to punch, shoot a gun and abandon the training bar. Writing a book, living in Latin America again and starting my own media consulting business are huge items on my bucket list.
When you’re not in the gym, we can find you? You’ll always find me reading memoirs in bed on my rest day. I’m usually scrambling to walk my black lab along Alki or cooking at home. I also like to dance tango. In the summer, I love to swim at Colman Pool, it’s West Seattle’s best kept secret.
When this song comes on the stereo at the gym, you KNOW you’re going to own the workout! Crossfit has given me an appreciation of bad pop music. If we listened to The Clash and Bomba Estereo, I’d totally hit higher PR’s.
Your biggest CrossFit accomplishment? Building strength. When I first started, I could barely lift the training bar. In the past year with a lot of hard work and consistency in my training, I’ve built strength and began lifting heavier weights. Recently, I PR’ed my deadlift at #210. I can back squat more than my bodyweight. I can’t believe it!
And a goal you’re working on today? Getting a pull-up was a huge accomplishment, but now I’m working on getting three pull-ups. I want to be able to smoothly squat clean more than #100. I’m also actively working on my speed-endurance while running. It’s great that crossfit constantly challenges you and forces you to set new goals.
Dream vacation spot? Cuba is at the top on my list of places I want to visit soon. I will always want to go back to Buenos Aires.
The movement in the gym you love the most? Rope climbs and anything that involves hanging from a bar – I love gymnastics. I also love cleans; it’s definitely my favorite Olympic lift.
And the movement you hope is never on the board? Overhead squats and snatches are my ego busters. Of course, box jumps. I don’t like to give up, but I’ve given up on getting box jumps, sorry coaches. **Update** I witnessed Marie getting through over 100 box jumps that past Sunday! GO MARIE! See? Never ever ever give up!
Advice you would give to a new member or someone trying CrossFit for the first time? You will find an amazing community ready to cheer you on, give you support and challenge you. The coaches have mad skills and are so kind and encouraging. Starting is the hardest part, but as soon as you begin making gains and reaching your goals, you won’t want to stop. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish.
